  • 1796Napoleon Bonaparte married Josephine De Beauharnais inParis.
  • 1862, The ironclads the USS Monitor, a Union ship, and the CSS Merrimack, a Confederate ship, had their famous battle at Hampton Roads. It was a standoff.
  • 1918 Author Mickey Spillane (I, The Jury, creator of Mike Hammer) is born.
  • 1934, Soviet astronaut Yuri Gagarin is born. He becomes the first human to leave Earth and enter space. Gagarin dies in 1968.
  • 1940 Actor Raul Julia (the Addams Family movies' Gomez) is born. He dies in 1994.
  • 1945, duringWorld War II,U.S. bombers launched incendiary attacks onTokyo, causing widespread devastation. At least 83,000 people were killed.
  • 1959, the Barbie doll first went on sale.
  • 1961, the Russian dog named Blackie became the first animal to return alive from space, aboard the Soviet spacecraft Sputnik 9.
  • 1964, the first Ford Mustang was produced.

  • 1995 Scott Amedure, a talk-show guest on The Jenny Jones Show, is shot to death by Jonathan Schmitz, a friend who also appeared on the show. Schmitz had been surprised three days earlier during the taping of the show, which was about secret admirers, when Amedure admitted he had a crush on Schmitz. The show never airs.
  • 1996 Actor-comedian George Burns dies at age 100.
  • 1997 Gangsta rapper the Notorious B.I.G. (real name Christopher Wallace) is killed in a still-unsolved drive-by shooting inLos Angeles at the age of 24.
  • 1999 Metallica's 1983 debut album, Kill 'Em All, is certified triple platinum.
  • 2000 Kiss shoots a TV commercial for Pepsi inPhoenix,Arizona, during rehearsals for the opening night of their farewell tour.

  • 2001 In Yokohama, Japan, Eric Singer plays his first show with Kiss while wearing Peter Criss's cat makeup. Criss left the group over financial issues.
  • 2002 AC/DC frontman Brian Johnson and bassist Cliff Williams join Billy Joel and his band onstage inTampa,Florida, for a version of "Highway To Hell."
  • 2004 Sammy Hagar welcomes Damageplan guitarist Dimebag Darrell and drummer Vinnie Paul and Red Hot Chili Peppers drummer Chad Smith to the stage at the Palms Casino in Las Vegas for versions of the Troggs' "Wild Thing," the Kinks' "You Really Got Me," and Led Zeppelin's "Rock And Roll."
  • 2004 White Stripes frontman Jack White goes to trial to face misdemeanor assault charges. White is accused of beating up Von Bondies singer Jason Stollseimer at aDetroit nightclub the previous December. White pleads guilty and is sentenced to probation, a fine, and anger management therapy.
  • 2005 Dave Matthews Band tour bus driver Stefan Wohl, who was accused of discharging 800 pounds of human waste from the band's tour bus off a bridge onto tourists inChicago the previous August, pleads guilty to charges of reckless conduct and causing pollution. He's fined $10,000 and sentenced to 18 months probation and 150 hours of community service.
  • 2006 Audioslave singer Chris Cornell announces the opening of his first eatery, called Black Calavados, inParis during the French city's Fashion Week.
  • 2006 Several rock web sites report that nude photos of Fall Out Boy bassist Pete Wentz have surfaced on the Internet. Wentz, who took the pictures himself, claims they were stolen off his Sidekick by hackers.
  • 2006 The line-up for the 2006 edition of OzzFest is announced, with Ozzy Osbourne playing just ten shows and the rest of the main stage filled out by System Of A Down, Disturbed, Hatebreed, Lacuna Coil and Avenged Sevenfold.
  • 2007 TheUS Justice Department releases an internal audit that finds that the FBI had acted illegally to secretly obtain personal information about US citizens through the Patriot Act.
  • 2009 Southern rock quartet Saving Abel have their 2008 self-titled debut album certified gold by the Recording Industry Association of America (RIAA) for sales of more than 500,000 copies.
