  • 1898, the American flag was raised in Puerto Rico shortly beforeSpain formally relinquished control of the island to theUnited States.
  • 1927 Actor George C. Scott (Dr. Strangelove Or: How I Learned To Stop Worrying And Love The Bomb, Patton, Exorcist III, Malice) is born. He dies in 1999.
  • 1931 Inventor Thomas Alva Edison dies at age 84.
  • 1935 Actor Peter Boyle (Young Frankenstein, Taxi Driver, The Santa Clause, Everybody Loves Raymond, Monster's Ball) is born. He dies in 2006.
  • 1939 Alleged John F. Kennedy assassin Lee Harvey Oswald is born. He is shot to death by Jack Ruby shortly after Kennedy is gunned down in November 1963.

  • 1977, "Mr. October" Reggie Jackson hit three home runs on three consecutive pitches for the New York Yankees in the deciding Game Six of the World Series, which the Yankees won against the Los Angeles Dodgers.

  • 2000 Rage Against The Machine singer Zack De La Rocha announces that he is leaving the band, saying in a statement, "I feel that it is now necessary to leave Rage because our decision-making process has completely failed. It is no longer meeting the aspirations of all four of us collectively as a band, and from my perspective, has undermined our artistic and political ideals."

  • 2001, it was announced that a letter carrier in New Jersey and an employee in CBS news anchorman Dan Rather's office had tested positive for skin anthrax.
  • 2002 Hoobastank's self-titled major label debut goes platinum.
