  • 1939 Alleged John F. Kennedy assassin Lee Harvey Oswald is born. He is shot to death by Jack Ruby shortly after Kennedy is gunned down in November 1963.

  • 1969, Lew Alcindor makes his pro debut with the Milwaukee Bucks. He later changes his name to Kareem Abdul-Jabbar, and retires as the all-time leading scorer in NBA history.
  • 1977, "Mr. October" Reggie Jackson hit three home runs on three consecutive pitches for the New York Yankees in the deciding Game Six of the World Series, which the Yankees won against the Los Angeles Dodgers.
  • 1986 Iron Maiden's Somewhere In Time enters the album chart.
  • 1987 Kiss's Crazy Nights enters the album chart.
  • 1988, The TV show Roseanne, starring Roseanne, John Goodman, and Laurie Metcalf, debuts on ABC.
  • 1990 The city of Los Angeles declares it "Rocky Horror Picture Show Day," marking the 15th anniversary of the movie's release.
  • 1993, a Los Angeles jury acquitted two black defendants of most charges in the beating of white truck driver Reginald Denny during the 1992 riots. The jury did convict Damian Williams of simple mayhem and Henry Watson of simple assault.
  • 1994 Soundgarden's Superunknown is certified triple platinum, while Nine Inch Nails' The Downward Spiral is certified platinum.
  • 1996 The movie Swingers, starring Jon Favreau, Vince Vaughn, Heather Graham, and Brooke Langton, opens.
  • 1999 Jimmy Page and the Black Crowes perform the first of two shows at the Greek Theatre in Los Angeles that are recorded and released as Jimmy Page & The Black Crowes Live At The Greek.
  • 2000 Rage Against The Machine singer Zack De La Rocha announces that he is leaving the band, saying in a statement, "I feel that it is now necessary to leave Rage because our decision-making process has completely failed. It is no longer meeting the aspirations of all four of us collectively as a band, and from my perspective, has undermined our artistic and political ideals."

  • 2001, it was announced that a letter carrier in New Jersey and an employee in CBS news anchorman Dan Rather's office had tested positive for skin anthrax.
  • 2002 Hoobastank's self-titled major label debut goes platinum.
  • 2002 The Ring, an American remake of the hugely successful Japanese horror film Ringu, opens in theatres nationwide with Naomi Watts in the lead role.
  • 2004 British tabloid The Mirror reports that Bush frontman Gavin Rossdale is secretly the father of a 15-year-old daughter.
  • 2004 U2 frontman Bono is named one of two recipients of the Freedom Award from the National Civil Rights Museum.
  • 2005 A charity single organized by Sharon Osbourne to raise money for victims of the Asian tsunami and Hurricane Katrina is released.   • 2007, After 8 years in exile, Benazir Bhutto returns to her homelandPakistan. The same night, suicide attackers blow themselves up near Bhutto's convoy, killing over 100 in the cheering crowd, including 20 police officers. Bhutto escaped uninjured.
