  • 1905 in his major league debut, the Detroit Tigers' Ty Cobb doubled off New York Highlanders pitcher Jack Chesbro in a 5-3 Tigers victory.
  • 1918 Baseball great Ted Williams was born. He died July 5th, 2002, at age 83.
  • 1918 Nikolai Lenin survived an attempted assassination in Moscow by Fanya Kaplan, a member of the Social Revolutionary Party. Kaplan was executed four days later, on September 3rd.
  • 1963 The "Hot Line" communications link betweenWashington andMoscow goes into operation after a lack of direct communication during the Cuban Missile Crisis almost results in nuclear war.
  • 1965 Casey Stengel announced his retirement after 55 years in baseball.
  • 1967 the U.S. Senate confirmed the appointment of Thurgood Marshall as the first black justice on the U.S. Supreme Court.
  • 1970 Jimi Hendrix plays his final gig in the U.K. on the final day of the Isle Of Wight festival.
  • 1974 The Brady Bunch last aired on ABC.
  • 1983 Guion S. Bluford Jr. became the first African-American astronaut to travel in space, flying aboard the Challenger 3 in the eighth space shuttle mission.

  • 1989 A federal jury in New York finds hotel queen Leona Helmsley guilty of income tax evasion.
  • 1989 Guns N' Roses guitarist Izzy Stradlin is arrested for creating a disturbance, urinating on the floor, verbally abusing a flight attendant, and smoking in a no-smoking area on a U.S. Airways flight.
  • 1990 Ken Griffey and Ken Griffey Jr. become the first father and son to play on the same baseball team at the same time, when both men suit up for the Seattle Mariners.
  • 1993 The Late Show With David Letterman airs for the first time.
  • 1993 U2 bassist Adam Clayton and model Naomi Campbell postpone their wedding for a year, citing work commitments for the delay. They never marry.
  • 2001 Actor Charles Bronson (The Magnificent Seven, The Great Escape, Deathwish) dies at the age of 81.
  • 2002 Limp Bizkit frontman Fred Durst, known for his trademark red baseball cap, launches a new line of hats through his company, Flawless.
  • 2004 Fuel announces that they've fired drummer Kevin Miller.
  • 2005 Death Cab For Cutie releases its major label debut, Plans.
  • 2005 Garbage cancels a European tour scheduled for October, saying in a statement that the band has "overextended themselves."
  • 2007 Buckcherry's massive hit "Crazy Bitch" notches a full year in the Nielsen Ringscan Top 30, which measures downloads of ringtones, and is the first song to achieve that in the chart's brief history.
