Def Leppard Releases Hysteria – August 3, 1987

Conversation Starters

  • On this day in 1987 Def Leppard released “Hysteria”!  What’s your favorite song from the album?
  • Def Leppard released “Hysteria” 26 years ago today!  How do you think it compares to the other Def Leppard LPs?

Fast Facts

  • Released: August 3, 1987 via Mercury Records
  • Producer(s): Robert “Mutt” Lange, Jim Steinman and Def Leppard
  • Hysteria was Def Leppard’s fourth studio album, and the follow-up to the band’s 1983 record Pyromania
  • The album was recorded in studios in Holland, Ireland and France
  • Hysteria was initially to be entitled “Animal Instinct”
  • The album hit the No.1 spot on the Billboard Top 200 Chart in the U.S. (after 49 weeks) and in the U.K.

o   The LP took a while to catch on in the U.S.

  • Hysteria has sold over 20 million copies worldwide, making it Def Leppard’s best-selling album
  • The album created seven hit singles, among them, “Pour Some Sugar on Me” and “Love Bites”
  • Drummer Rick Allen thought up the name of the album by drawing on his experiences during the time of his car accident—in which he lost his arm—and the subsequent media coverage

o   The album has a “pop-metal” sound because of Allen’s new partially electronic drum kit

  • The album took over three years (February 1984 – January 1987) to be created as there were many challenges along the way

o    Among them were Allen’s auto accident, Mutt Lange quitting and then rejoining the project and later hurting his leg in an auto accident, and singer Joe Elliott coming down with the mumps

  • Hysteria took an estimated $5 million to complete
  • Def Leppard held the No.1 Billboard singles spot with “Love Bites” and the No.1 album spot with Hysteria in the Oct. 8, 1988 issue of Billboard; Hysteria spent 133 weeks on the Billboard charts
  • At the 1989 American Music Awards, Def Leppard won awards for Favorite Heavy Metal/Hard Rock Artist and Favorite Heavy Metal/Hard Rock Album for Hysteria
  • Q Magazine readers ranked Hysteria as the 98th Greatest Album of All Time in 1988
  • Rolling Stone ranked the album at No. 472 on their list of the 500 Greatest Albums of All Time in 2004
  • In 2013, Def Leppard rerecorded all of the music from Hysteria and released it to iTunes after having a dispute with their former label regarding the digital rights to their catalog
  • From March 22 – April 13 of this year, the band played a residency at The Joint inside the Las Vegas Hard Rock Hotel and Casino called VIVA Hysteria! in which they performed music from the album
