  • Hetfield’s garage band Obsession was his first group
  • Some of Hetfield’s other early bands were called Phantom Lord and Leather Charm
  • Hetfield formed Metallica with Danish drummer Lars Ulrich in 1982 in San Francisco; the original lineup also featured bassist Cliff Burton and guitarist Dave Mustaine
  • Originally Hetfield did not want to be the frontman of the Metallica, as he preferred playing backup
  • Hetfield is the main songwriter for Metallica
  • Some of the band’s best-known albums include Kill ’em All (1983), Ride the Lightening (1984), Master of Puppets (1986), …And Justice for All (1988) and Metallica (1991)

Personal Life

  • Hetfield’s parents were strict Christian Scientists; his father was a truck driver and his mother a light opera singer
  • Hetfield has a younger sister in addition to two older half-brothers from his mother’s first marriage
  • His parents divorced when he was young
  • Hetfield’s mother died when he was 16; the Metallica song “The God That Failed” is about her death
  • Hetfield once suffered serious burns in a pyrotechnic accident onstage

o   He is very accident-prone and broken bones from skateboarding accidents have sidelined the guitarist several times

  • Hetfield has three children with wife Francesca (1997 – Present): Cali, Castor, Marcella
  • He’s an Oakland Raiders fan and also enjoys snowboarding, water and jet skiing, and sketching
  • Hetfield refuses to use fame as a platform for political opinions
  • Hetfield is an avid hunter and member of the NRA
  • In addition to collecting classic guitars, he is also a classic car enthusiast

Today, David Florig, the Executive Director of WePac was in to discuss the library situation in the Philadelphia School System. Right now there are only 12 state paid libraries open at elementary schools in Philly, 28 over all. There are 150 schools in Philly.
