Conversation Starters

  • Happy Birthday to Slowhand himself, Eric Clapton! Wish the guitar great a good one below!
  • Happy Birthday to the one and only Eric Clapton! Is he your favorite guitarist of all time?

Fast Facts

  • Born: March 30, 1945 in Surrey, England
  • Full name: Eric Patrick Clapton
  • Age: 68
  • Was given the nickname “Slowhand” by Yardbirds’ manager Giorgio Gomelsky not because of his slow playing but because, according to Yardbirds guitarist Chris Dreja, at a concert in 1964 Clapton played his guitar so hard that a string broke, and when he stayed on stage to replace it the audience gave him a “slow hand clap” as they waited
  • He is the only triple inductee into the Rock and Rock Hall of Fame.  He was inducted with The Yardbirds in 1992, with Cream in 1993, and as a solo artist in 2000
  • His Grammy-winning song “Tears In Heaven” is dedicated to the memory of his 4-year-old  son Conor who in 1991 died tragically in a fall from a 53rd story apartment window that a maintenance worker had accidently left open
  • Clapton gave a televised PSA the year after his son passed that urged parents of young children to install gates over the windows of their apartments
  • Clapton plays the guitar solo George Harrison’s “While My Guitar Gently Weeps;” Clapton and Harrison were both married to model Pattie Boyd as well. Clapton wrote the hit songs “Layla” and “Wonderful Tonight” about her
  • In 1993, he became the first ever British artist to win 6 Grammy awards in one night
  • Stephen Stills once asked him to join Crosby, Stills & Nash but Clapton refused because he was in the process of forming Blind Faith at the time
  • In the 60’s, his fans came up with the phrase “Clapton is God” which was famously spray painted onto the London Underground
  • In 2007, a Canadian journalist tracked down Clapton’s mother and father, about whom he wrote “My Father’s Eyes.” His father was a pianist and saxophonist who had died in 1985 having no idea his son was one of the most famous guitarists in the world
  • Had a £1,000 a week heroin addiction in the 1970’s that he overcame with acupuncture and a short retirement

Personal Info

  • Married to Pattie Boyd from March 27, 1979 – June 1988
  • Married to Melia McEnery since January 1, 2002
  • Has 3 daughters with Melia McEnery
