Fast Facts
- Born William Bruce Rose on February 6, 1962 in Lafayette, IN
- Rose was raised in a strict Pentecostal family and began singing in church; he also taught Sunday School
- Legally changed name to W. Axl Rose in 1986
- Rose co-founded Guns N’ Roses in the early 80s, which rose from the ashes of bands such as LA Guns and Hollywood Rose; the lineup included Slash, Izzy Stradlin, Duff McKagan and Steven Adler
- The band’s debut album, Appetite for Destruction (1987) is one of the best-selling albums of all time
- GNR did not official disband, but key members such as Slash, Matt Sorum and others gradually left as there was an incredible amount of turmoil in the band
- Guns N’ Roses was inducted into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame in 2012; Axl did not attend the ceremony
- Rose is known for stopping concerts to deal with unruly fans; he is also known for his constant tardiness, at times showing up more than three hours late for concerts
- Rose once told Rolling Stone he wants “Sorry I’m Late” written on his coffin, and to have it show up a half hour after the ceremony starts
- Axl stills plays under the GNR moniker to this day, and there are rumors that the group (which has an entirely new lineup sans Rose) will release a new album sometime in 2013
Personal Info
- Was married to model Erin Everly, who was the inspiration for the song “Sweet Child O’ Mine;” Rose filed for divorce after just a month
- Rose has had his share of legal trouble; In 1988, he told Rolling Stone he had been arrested "over twenty times,” including once for biting a Swedish security guard’s leg
