The Final Cut: 'Warm Bodies'

(NECN: Erick Weber) - It hasn't exactly been the greatest month at the movies, since January is when the studios traditionally dump their worst stuff on us. However, as we close out the month, our first unexpected treat of the new year has arrived with "Warm Bodies".

Nicholas Hoult stars as "R", a 20-something zombie living inside a jetliner and spending his days slogging around an airport terminal. He can't speak coherently with his lips, but he's capable of making regular conversations with himself inside his rotted-out mind.

While out on a brain-eating mission, R stumbles upon a non-zombified teen named Julie, played by Terese Palmer, and it's love at first sight. Director Jonathan Levine's use of John Waits' 80s classic "Missing You" nearly had me in tears.

"Warm Bodies" is all about the zombie/human romance - think "Twilight" with zombies, but, ironically a ton more brains. And heart. And wit. In fact, forget the "Twilight" comparison. "Warm Bodies" is better than that, and the charming little zom-com gets a solid Final Cut score of 90 percent.

Our second film is a hard one to track down at the moment. In fact, its only New England screening was Thursday night, but you can stream it online and track it down on iTunes - it's Dave Grohl's "Sound City."

The documentary details the rise and fall of one of the most influential buildings in music's illustrious history: L.A.'s Sound City Studios.

While the place is a dump, don't you dare call its acoustics into question. Countless bands, including Fleetwood Mac, Tom Petty and the Heartbreakers, Cheap Trick and Nirvana, recorded some of the music business' biggest albums at the unsightly joint.

Grohl proves to be just as adept behind the camera as he is banging away on drums and cymbals. "Sound City" is an electrifyingly alive labor of love that will have your creative juices flowing. After seeing it, you'll want to do something, make something, be something. "Sound City" slams home a Final Cut score of 95 percent, making it the best film of 2013 so far.
