Tom Waits 101: A Guide to His Music

Posted 12/7/2011 9:00:00 PM

Ultimate Classic Rock posts recent Rock and Roll Hall of Fame inductee Tom Waits turns 62 today (Dec. 7). While we have no idea how Tom will spend the big day — the notoriously publicity-shy singer is the last person in the world we'd expect to share his plans — we thought it would be a good time to go over some of the highlights of his career. We'll examine what makes him so beloved by his devoted fans, and which records to seek out (and avoid) if you want to increase your level of Waits knowledge, regardless of where you stand right now. So without further pomp and circumstance, here's our introductory guide to the music of Tom Waits:

Greetings Citizens!

I got a call the other day from David Bryan, the keyboard player for Bon Jovi.  He worte the music and co-produced Memphis, the Tony award winning musical which is at the Academy of Music every night through Sunday, January 22.  It's a wonderful play about a DJ in the 1950s and the racial struggles of the time.  I highly reccomend seeing it before it leaves town next week.  I asked David about Memphis, the other musicals he's working on, and what Bon Jovi is up to these days.  By the way, you can purchase tickets for Memphis at www.KimmelCenter.org.  Take a listen!

Cheers,

Pierre
