Professionally shot video footage of Metallica's successful 10-song concert in Antarctica on Sunday (December 8th) has surfaced online. The historic concert took place under a dome at the Carlini Argentine Base and was heard by the fans through headphones, with no other amplifiers or sound system. Fans from several Latin and South American countries had a chance to enter a contest and win the opportunity to join the band on the expedition. The gig was also live-streamed in the participating countries.

  • The dome that the band played inside was relatively small, but drummer Lars Ulrich told us a while back that Metallica enjoys performing in small spaces as much as large stadiums: "Playing small places are always fun. Any time you have a small place and you've got a lot of energy and a good vibe in a small place it's always fun 'cause the energy's contained. And obviously we spend a lot of time playing outdoors, and outdoors, it's great. But the energy kind of goes to the stars, you know. When you're playing small places and the energy's contained, it's pretty awesome."
  • On the video, Metallica frontman James Hetfield calls the show "the most memorable concert in Metallica history."
  • A statement posted on Metallica's Facebook page after the gig called it "the most unique show Metallica has ever done . . . The energy in the little dome was amazing! Words cannot describe how happy everyone was."
  • Metallica's gig was just the second rock concert ever performed on the Earth's southernmost continent. During the Live Earth series of concerts in 2007, a band called Nunatak -- comprised of research scientists stationed on the continent -- played a small show.
  • Metallica has now headed home to the presumably warmer climate of Northern California, where the band will settle down to writing its 10th studio album.
