STONE TEMPLE PILOTS BREAK OUT RARITIES AT SURPRISE FAN SHOW

9/4/2013

Stone Temple Pilots and new singer Chester Bennington performed a surprise set for about 30 fans and a handful of journalists on Sunday night (September 1st) at the band's rehearsal space in Los Angeles, according to Loudwire. The low-key performance took place ahead of the group's upcoming North American tour, which will kick off on Wednesday (September 4th) in Bethlehem, Pennsylvania and offer fans around the country their first look at Bennington with STP since the band recruited him to replace fired frontman Scott Weiland earlier this year.

  • The six-song set featured some deeper cuts that STP has rarely played live in the past, including "Sex And Violence," "Pop's Love Suicide," "Piece Of Pie" and "Church On Tuesday." Also aired were "Trippin' On A Hole In A Paper Heart" and current single "Out Of Time."
  • Guitarist Dean DeLeo told us that STP were hoping to mix up their set list now that Bennington was on board: "You know, there's been songs that we've been unable to play on a lot of tours. So I think that's what's really exciting to us, is being able to play some tunes that Chester has the ability to bring to life."
  • Following the show, the members of the band spent time talking with the fans in attendance, signing autographs and posing for pictures.
  • Stone Temple Pilots will release a new five-song EP called High Riseon October 8th. The disc will be the second release featuring Bennington following "Out Of Time," which emerged last spring and went to Number One on the rock chart.
  • The band fired Weiland in February and sued him in May, accusing him of using the band's name to advance his solo activities, while claiming that his poor performances, late arrivals, and addiction struggles harmed the band's career.
  • Weiland has countersued, claiming that the band cannot use the Stone Temple Pilots name without him.

INTERNET COMMENTS at Antiquiet -- agree or not?

superunknown wrote: "First Ben Affleck as Batman, now Linkin Park singer instead of Scott Weiland. I still can't believe it. Seriously, besides a fat pay check, what do these guys have left to offer. Just retire STP and move on."

Rob F wrote: "They sound awesome."

Alex wrote: "No. I hold STP in much higher regard than Linkin Park, and while I'm no Weiland fan boy, this was a bad choice from the outset. Chester looks like an IT guy who is losing his top range, and never had the low, bassy voice that any STP 2nd generation singer would need. Not saying that what's left of Weiland is any better, but this isn't STP anymore."
