BECK'S RETROSPECTIVE NYC ACOUSTIC SHOW

7/30/2013

Fans filled NYC club Le Poisson Rouge on Friday night (July 26th) to check out Beck's first acoustic tour in seven-odd years. According to Spin.com, the set list was comprised of hits, deep cuts, and covers from the singer's two-decade-long career.

Beck addressed the crowd saying, "I started playing in New York in the late '80s. It was a boom time for folk music, let me tell you." Throughout the night he continued to entertain his audience with tales of his early years in the city in between playing tracks like "One Foot in the Grave," "Hollow Log," and "Gamma Ray." According to Spin's Jem Aswad, the evening's best moment came during the encore when he a performed a psychedelic take on his hit "Loser."

  • He also performed covers of Chris Bell's "I Am the Cosmos," the Everly Brothers' "Sleepless Nights," and a mashup of Michael Jackson's "Billie Jean" and T. Rex's "Bang a Gong."
  • The only new material on the set list were four tracks from his album Song Reader.
  • Beck was joined on stage by longtime accomplices -- guitarist/mandolinist Smokey Hormel, keyboardist Roger Manning, and bassist Jason Falker. Rather than a live drummer, they used a "traditional folk instrument from Japan...called a Korg."
