Last week Billy Joel helped New York hedge funder Thomas Kempner Jr celebrate his 60th birthday but it wasn't cheap. According to sources, Kempner's wife, Kitty, paid Joel $2 million to perform an hour and a half. A party goer told the gossip columns, "It was a lovely party . . . some of Thomas' family members made touching speeches, then Billy Joel played with his band for a long time. But it was amusing to see all the billionaires dancing to Billy's 'Allentown' about the depressed manufacturing industry. Nobody there would know anything about working at a steel mine unless they owned one."
In the past, Billy Joel has explained how difficult it is to come up with a set lists for certain performances. He explained: "You're always trying to strike a balance between what the audience would like to hear, what we want to play, and what actually balances out to make a good show and it's kind of hard to strike a balance sometimes. I would not be happy just playing the hits. And I know people are walking out sometimes going, 'Well why didn't he, why didn't he play 'Uptown Girl?' Why didn't he play 'Matter Of Trust?' Why didn't he play 'She's Got A Way?' Why didn't he play 'Tell Her About It?' But we don't always want to do those."
