BILLIE JOE ARMSTRONG WRITING SONGS FOR NEW MUSICAL

3/15/2013

Green Day frontman Billie Joe Armstrong apparently still has the stage musical bug after guiding the band's 2004 American Idiot concept album to Broadway a couple of years back. According to Rolling Stone, the singer/guitarist is writing new music for a Yale Repertory Theater rock version of Shakespeare's Much Ado About Nothing. The show, called These Paper Bullets, will follow a band from Liverpool as they navigate the music industry in London. It will premiere in March 2014.

  • Armstrong previously adapted American Idiot for the stage, starting in 2009 with a workshop version in Berkeley, California that eventually made its way to Broadway, where it ran for a year.
  • Armstrong even appeared in the show as St. Jimmy during two stretches of its run on the Great White Way.
  • Green Day returned to the stage last Sunday (March 10th) in Pomona, California after a six-month hiatus, playing the first of two warm-up gigs before a show at the South By Southwest festival in Austin, Texas on Friday (March 15th).
  • The forced break began when Armstrong entered rehab in late September after a meltdown at a Las Vegas festival, later admitting that he had been addicted to alcohol and pills for years.
  • Following the South By Southwest stop, the trio will begin a 13-date North American tour on March 28th in Rosemont, Illinois.

WHAT DO YOU THINK??

  • After American Idiot the album and musical, plus the 21st Century Breakdown concept album, should Billie Joe stop with the musicals already?
  • The three latest Green Day albums have all basically tanked -- should he concentrate on getting himself better and then figuring out how to make the band appealing again, instead of writing rock operas?
  • Or is it his prerogative to do whatever the hell he wants without caring what anybody thinks?

INTERNET COMMENTS at RollingStone.com -- agree or not?

Mike wrote: "This guy is begging to have his punk credibility revoked."

Iain MacDonald wrote: "Who cares, seriously? I'm sick of what is 'punk,' at least this guy is doing things as he sees fit, not you and your set ways that someone else tells you to have."
