AEROSMITH LEADERS SET FOR MAJOR ASCAP HONOR

2/20/2013

Aerosmith's Steven Tyler and Joe Perry will be awarded the prestigious ASCAP Founders Award at its upcoming 30th annual Pop Music Awards. The invitation-only gala will take place on April 17th at L.A.'s Loews Hollywood Hotel. In addition to the award, the event celebrates the top songwriters and publishers of ASCAP's most performed pop songs of 2012.

Steven Tyler said in a statement: "To be recognized by ASCAP with the Founders Award is a huge achievement. It is humbling for Joe and me to be honored for our music alongside the likes of Stevie Wonder, Neil Young, Paul McCartney and Joni Mitchell. It's been a life-long love affair and it's far from over. Besides, any society that lets Tom Waits in. . . I'm there!"

Joe Perry added: "As songwriters, it is a great honor to have ASCAP recognize Steven and me with the Founders Award. We join an incredible list of honorees and we are grateful to ASCAP for their support throughout our career."

  • Past ASCAP Founders Award recipients include Paul McCartney, Stevie Wonder, Jackson Browne, Elvis Costello, Joni Mitchell, Billy Joel, Carly Simon, Smokey Robinson, Burt Bacharach & Hal David, James Taylor, Heart's Ann & Nancy Wilson, Tom Waits, Steely Dan's Donald Fagen & Walter Becker, and Rod Stewart, among others.
  • Aerosmith released its most recent album, Music From Another Dimension on November 6th. The set peaked at Number Five on the Billboard 200 charts. Joe Perry maintains that the strength of any album begins and ends with the quality of the songwriting: "We've made records that have taken two years and cost millions of dollars. We made records in the early days that cost next to nothing. And the correlation between the two is never, 'A great record costs a lot of money, or a s****y record doesn't cost much.' One doesn't have anything to do with the other."

SIDE NOTES

  • Last month Steven Tyler split from his 39-year-old fiancee, model Erin Brady. A source close to the couple told The New York Post's Page Six: "It's over for good this time. Steven was just not that nice to her in the end. His family and entourage never really accepted her and she can do better. They're still friendly but they're going their own ways. The engagement is off."
  • The couple began dating in 2006 and Tyler proposed to Brady during the Christmas holidays in 2011. Tyler was married to first wife Cyrinda Foxe from 1978 to 1987 and Teresa Barrick from 1998 to 2006.
