Oscilloscope Laboratories, the independent film company started in 2008 by late Beastie Boys member Adam Yauch, has vowed to continue the tradition that Yauch started of releasing unique, truly independent movies. According to Rolling Stone, the company has several films coming up in 2013, including a "dark comedy" called It's A Disaster and Reality, which won the Grand Prix at this year's Cannes Film Festival.

  • Oscilloscope was described by one producer as having a "rough 12 months" due to both the death of Yauch in May and the departure of co-founder David Fenkel in August.
  • But Dan Berger, who now co-heads the company with David Laub, said that the company's troubled period "has really just served to make us all closer, more dedicated, and frankly more responsible to ensure that Adam's legacy remains strong partly through the work we do."
  • Recent Oscilloscope releases include the surreal New Orleans documentary Tchoupitoulas as well as the acclaimed, visually stunning documentary Samsara.
  • Other films that the company has distributed in the past few years include Meek's Cutoff, the Banksy documentary Exit Through The Gift Shop, the LCD Soundsystem documentary Shut Up And Play The Hits, and a documentary on punk rock fathers called The Other F Word.
  • Yauch passed away in early May after a three-year battle with cancer of the salivary gland, just a few weeks after the Beastie Boys were inducted into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame.
