BACKSTAGE SOUND
Hunter Hayes scored his first Grammy nods in three categories, including overall Best New Artist: "Yeah, honestly, I'm still kind of speechless. I'm struggling with words because it's like there are people in this category that I've bought the records (and) I'm a fan of, you know? As a new artist you just hope people like what you do and I made this record, I spent years writing this record . . . a bunch of songs that didn't really make a whole lot of sense, some that did. I spend an entire year in the processes of making the record, seven months directly in the studio with the red light on. All I want to do is make music, and to be recognized as a new artist that's maybe doing something right . . . that kind of recognition, it means the world and it kind of changes your perspective and it says, 'Wow, you can dream that big,' you know? It kind of opens the doors a little bit."
Dierks Bentley earned his career 12th Grammy nod for Best Country Solo Performance for "Home." He tells us the nominations never get old: "No, it's great. I haven't won a Grammy yet. I've been nominated 12 times. No, it doesn't wear off. It's just always nice to be invited to the party, and the Grammys is one of the coolest parties of the year. For a song that you're really proud of it never wears off and it's always cool. (I'm) always grateful. It is great to be nominated. It's a good category and I've got a lot of respect for everyone in that category for sure."
Fun. earned six nominations, including Album of the Year for Some Nights. Jack Antonoff says the group has tried not to buy into the hype about them but they definitely take pride in their Grammy nods. "People have said a lot of stuff to us this year about a lot of crazy things. Some of them have happened (and) some of them haven't and we've just put all the stock into the show. That's the only thing we've ever been able to count on as a band was getting up there and playing for people and having control over what we do, so these things we have no control over we try not to think about them and then if they do happen, like tonight, it feels that much better because we didn't plan in any way, and as for winning anything, it's such a stock answer but it's really true -- it's been an incredible year in music. It feels like alternative music is back looking at the Album of the Year especially, those nominations, we couldn't be more proud to be in there. We couldn't be more proud to be in all of them but there's a change that's coming in music and this feels like a big year for that so we're just excited to be a part of it."
Taylor Swift tried her hand at beatboxing in the show's opening segment, and her ability got high marks from Ne-Yo. "You know what, I think should Taylor decide that she wants to do some hip hop at some point in her career she might be able to pull it off. Beatboxing is not an easy thing to do, okay. Don't let it fool you. She pulled that off. It sounded authentic. It sounded like she knew what she was doing, so Taylor, if you ever want to get your hip hop on holler at your boy. Let's do it."
