PAUL McCARTNEY, BRUCE SPRINGSTEEN, THE WHO, & BILLY JOEL TO HEADLINE MSG 'SANDY' BENEFIT

11/16/2012

Paul McCartney, Bruce Springsteen & The E Street Band, the Who, Billy Joel, Roger Waters, and Jon Bon Jovi will be among the legends taking part in the 12-12-12: The Concert For Sandy Relief set for next month at New York's Madison Square Garden. Rolling Stone reported that the December 12th concert will raise money for the Robin Hood Relief Fund to aid victims of Hurricane Sandy. Other performers on the bill include Kanye West and Alicia Keys, with more acts soon to be announced. The concert is being presented by Madison Square Garden Company, Clear Channel Media and Entertainment, and The Weinstein Company. The concert will air live on the Fuse channel with ticket information expected to be announced in the coming days.

James Dolan, John Sykes, and Harvey Weinstein -- the same group that sponsored 2001's Concert For New York City -- said in a statement: "12-12-12 is shaping up to be a showcase of music royalty. The response from the entertainment community to help those most affected by Hurricane Sandy has been nothing short of astounding. We expect to announce additional legendary performers in the near future and we are confident that the event will ensure those in need will not be forgotten, and vital aid will be directed to rebuilding our communities along the East Coast."

  • The Who's Roger Daltrey admits that the band and the U.S. have enjoyed a mutual love of one another since the band's U.S. debut back in 1967 in New York City: "I've never ceased to be incredibly humbled by the affection shown by America to the Who. It's been an incredible relationship; our audience has been incredibly loyal. And it's great that you kind of get our music hopefully in the same way that we do. Y'know, I feel so passionate about (Pete) Townshend's music and what he wrote and it's standing in the big scheme of things. It seems to me that that's one thing that America gets as well -- they understand it too, they're as passionate about it as I am."

JUST OUR OPINION

  • Man, how much is Mick Jagger hating that this concert is happening??? Right in the middle of the Stones' bloated and exorbitant ego gigs -- not to mention a pay-per-view-special -- this is going to steal ALL THE THUNDER away from the Stones' New York area shows. Plus it's gonna be FREE to watch on cable -- something that the Stones' Newark special show WON'T BE.
  • The band HAS to bow under the pressure to perform at the benefit. They're in NYC, rehearsed, on the road with all their equipment -- what are they gonna do, NOT play??? Do you know how bad this will look if the Stones don't get on board for this thing, but instead choose to split town after taking millions out of the very states that were creamed by Sandy???
  • Personally, with all the hemming and hawing regarding the Stones hitting the road, we thought it was in poor taste to book the dates smack dab in the middle of the Who's first tour in four years -- but THIS benefit show is the one thing Jagger was NEVER betting on happening.
  • McCartney, the Who, Springsteen, and Billy Joel -- this is the CONCERT OF THE YEAR!!! Played the SAME WEEK the Stones come back. Gotta be KILLING Mick!!!
