MUMFORD AND SONS 'WEREN'T EXPECTING' PEOPLE TO BUY 'BABEL'

11/15/2012

Even though their new album, Babel, has sold nearly 1.1 million copies in just six weeks, Mumford And Sons frontman Marcus Mumford told MTV News that the band had no idea the record would be that successful. Mumford said, "We spend our lives in a constant state of surprise at the moment, definitely. We weren't expecting people to (buy the album), especially people who had heard the songs already. You could pretty much listen to the whole album on YouTube, just in a different order to the one we put down. Most of the songs were already online because we just liked playing them live."

  • Ever since moving 600,000 copies in its first week of release back in late September, Babel has stayed in the Billboard Top 10, where it's currently Number Seven.
  • It's the year's best-selling rock album and has sold more copies than Justin Bieber's Believe and Nicki Minaj's Roman Reloaded.
  • Mumford added that even though Babel has sold massively, especially in the current music industry climate, the road is still where his band does best. He explained, "People love seeing live shows, and that's lucky for us, because that's what we love doing most. More so than albums or radio shows or whatever, we love playing gigs, and that's what it's all about for us."
  • The band will play a handful of U.S. shows on the East Coast next February, but has yet to announce a full North American tour. A live DVD called The Road To Red Rocks, filmed last summer, is due out in January.
