The Black Keys have been making noises for a while about recording their eighth album, and now it seems like the plan is being solidified. Drummer Patrick Carney told CBS Local that the duo plan to get started early in 2013, saying, "We're going to start making a new album in January and we're going to tour a little more in the spring. Our plan is the have the new album done by the end of spring or earlier, then hopefully take a few months off to do normal things like go to bed early and wake up early, walk the dog, that kind of stuff. Then we'll probably be back on the road starting next fall."

  • The Keys issued El Camino last December. The disc has sold nearly one million copies since its release, making it the band's most successful effort ever.
  • Frontman Dan Auerbach told us that the Keys never set out to make albums aimed at commercial success: "The records that we like are all kind of gritty and raw and not commercial, necessarily, so we never concerned ourselves with like having singles or anything like that. We were just like, 'Cool, we've got 11 songs, that's a record, awesome. What are we gonna put on the album cover?' That was it. We were just two knuckleheads making records."
  • The Black Keys have been one of the more prolific rock bands in recent years: in the decade since Carney and Auerbach launched the band in Akron, Ohio, the Keys have released seven full albums, two EPs and a collaborative rock/rap record called Blakroc. Carney and Auerbach have also each released one solo album apiece.
  • Carney may especially be looking forward to some time off since he just got married, but he insisted that the follow-up to last year's El Camino would come out in 2013.
  • He explained, "(An album) is definitely gonna happen in 2013. It's just a matter of how long it takes us to make the album and deciding when we want to get back on the road . . . Whenever we try to build in breaks and time off, it doesn't work out. But next year, we're also committed to a vacation."
  • The duo are currently on a two-week U.S. tour that brings them to San Diego on Thursday (October 4th).
