HALESTORM 'NOT OFFENDED' BY HATERS CRITICIZING GRAMMY WIN

2/15/2013

Halestorm won the Grammy Award for Best Hard Rock/Metal Performance last Sunday night (February 10th) and since the surprise win a number of artists have gone online to gripe about it. Drummer Arejay Hale told Noisecreep that other musicians' criticisms of his band for winning the Grammy doesn't bother him at all. He explained, "I learned a long time ago that you have to embrace the hater, because it means that the band is getting bigger . . . So if people have to take the time to say something hateful or mean for whatever reason, it means the band is growing more and more and that more fans are finding out about us and that's a valuable thing."

Halestorm won for the track "Love Bites (So Do I)" from the band's 2012 album The Strange Case Of . . . , beating out long-established acts like Marilyn Manson and Iron Maiden. Hale added about the Grammy complaints, "We're not offended by that stuff at all. We think people should be as honest as they want to be . . . There were such legendary artists in that category and maybe we're just the ones that got picked to represent the new guard. But that's not our call." Hale also said that the band was as "surprised as anyone else" that they actually went home with the Grammy.

  • Singer Lzzy Hale said backstage at the Grammys that heavy rock acts in particular deserve recognition because they usually work hard for a long time before achieving success: "It's an incredible genre to be a part of because, you know, rock isn't always the most popular genre. Sometimes it dips up, it comes, you know, most times we're underground, but we all work really hard on the road and we've been a band for over 10 years, so this is really huge."
  • In one example, Shadows Fall drummer Jason Bittner said in a post online that Halestorm's win proved that "s*** is rotten in the music business" and was more upsetting than Metallica losing to Jethro Tull more than 20 years ago.
  • Halestorm continues to hit the trail in support of its second album, last year's The Strange Case Of . . . . They'll join headliners Bullet For My Valentine on this year's edition of the hardDrive Live tour, which kicks off on April 12th in Denver and runs through late May.

JUST OUR OPINION: Remind us again, who is Jason Bittner and why does anyone care what he thinks? Halestorm winning a Grammy is really more upsetting than Metallica losing to Jethro Tull? The category is Hard Rock/Metal, and while we have our issues with the Grammys, Halestorm is a hard rock band and one of the better new ones out there today. It was nice to see the Recording Academy give a prize to a fresh face instead of the same old guys. Everyone should stop their jealous whining.

WHAT DO YOU THINK??

  • Do you think Halestorm deserved their Grammy win?
  • Just because they were the "newest" act out of the ones nominated, does that automatically disqualify them somehow?
  • Is it just rude and disrespectful for other acts to criticize Halestorm's win? Does it make them seem petty and jealous?
