Bruce Springsteen's two-night New York City run at Madison Square Garden thrilled die-hards with an eclectic selection of rarities packed into each three-hour show. His Friday night (April 6th) concert took fans off guard by opening with 1978's "Badlands" -- a tune that so far has been placed earlier in the set than usual -- but very rarely an opener these days. The mood was lightened with "Out In The Streets" -- the only song performed from 1980's The River, along with some pretty dark material -- including the classic Born In The U.S.A. outtake "Murder Incorporated," which although the centerpiece of the E Street Band's 1999/2000 reunion tour, has gotten short shrift in the past decade.
Other highlights included a horn-driven version of the Nebraska standout "Johnny 99," "Lion's Den" -- yet another Born In The U.S.A. outtake that found a home on the 1998 Tracks box set, an obvious tribute to murder victim Trayvon Martin with "American Skin (41 Shots)," and a searing rendition of 1973's extended workout, "Kitty's Back." Springsteen once again hit a sentimental note dancing with his mom Adele and niece Ruby during "Dancing In The Dark."
- Monday night's (April 9th) show also opened with "Badlands" and featured "Out In The Street" early on, as well as a crowd diving rendition of "Spirit In The Night," a birthday crowd request for the 1973 rarity "Thundercrack," Springsteen's cover of Jimmy Cliff's "Trapped," "She's The One," "Because The Night," and explosive version of "Backstreets," as well as "Rosalita."
- Springsteen makes no bones about the importance and luxury of performing live for his fans on any given night: "The level of responsibility, to be living in the moment at that time when eight o'clock comes around, or whatever. And I got a real strong desire to do it (laughs) because I've gotten so much out of it and it's meant so much to me and it was really my 'life rope,' when I was young, before I was could let other things in my life. Y'know, it kept me afloat."
