NIRVANA LIVE RELEASE AND STUDIO REISSUE SURFACE

11/3/2009

Tuesday (November 3rd) sees a double blast from the past of Nirvana. First up is a deluxe reissue of the band's first full-length album, 1989's Bleach, to commemorate the 20th anniversary of its arrival. Released by the band's original label, Sub Pop Records, the special edition includes a previously unreleased live performance, a new remastering job on the original album and a collection of never-before-seen photos. The new recording, a live version of the Vaseline song "Molly's Lips" taped on February 9th, 1980 in Portland, Oregon, has been remixed by Bleach producer Jack Endino.

The deluxe edition arrives as both a single CD and a double LP set, with the latter pressed on 180-gram white vinyl.
Bleach was released in June of 1989 and initially sold more than 40,000 copies. The record's sales exploded after Nirvana became a phenomenon, eventually moving more than 1.7 million copies in the U.S.
Also on shelves Tuesday is Live At Reading, a CD and DVD chronicling the trio's legendary August 30th, 1992 headlining appearance at the U.K.'s Reading Festival. Never officially released before, the set comes as both a separate CD and DVD, as well as a deluxe CD/DVD package. The show has circulated on bootlegs for years, but the DVD features a pristine copy of the original film, while the audio portion is taken from the original recordings.

Nirvana's Reading show featured early performances of several songs that would not make their recorded debut until 1993's In Utero album, including "All Apologies," "Dumb" and 'Tourette's."
The show also included rare cover tunes and obscure songs from the band's pre-Nevermind days, as well as nearly every song from that record.
A vinyl edition of Live At Reading will be available on November 17th.
The Reading gig was ranked Number One in Kerrang magazine's "100 Gigs That Shook The World" and was voted as "Nirvana's Number One Greatest Moment" by fans in a poll sponsored by British music outlet NME.
Although ex-Nirvana bassist Krist Novoselic and drummer Dave Grohl still have a say in Nirvana releases, Novoselic told us a while back that he's got a philosophical perspective on it: ["In a hundred years I don't know who is going to own Nirvana. I'm not going to own it. I'll be dead and gone. You know what I mean? But I was part of it, and I'm proud of it. That's all I can really say."]
