Nine Inch Nails has gone all-out on their latest tour, and now, the band has premiered a video that gives fans a look into the intricacies of how their stage shows come together.
In a 13-minute clip released to VEVO for their “Tour Exposed” series, NIN crew and band members discuss the process of creating a visual masterpiece to serve as a backdrop to Trent Reznor’s iconic industrial rock songs.
It’s been nearly five years since NIN appeared onstage, but the group (complete with new members) came back strong in 2013 by playing several of the world’s biggest music festivals, including Lollapalooza and Outside Lands, while gearing up for the release of their latest studio album, Hesitation Marks.
The video kicks off as the team is in the midst of preparing for NIN’s appearance at Tokyo’s Fuji Rock Festival, and documents the band during rehearsal, and the crew as they test out all of the different effects that will incorporated into the show.
“My goal, if we're playing a 70 or 90-minute set, is that it's almost a film where it starts off one way and, not only musically but visually, evolves into something that keeps your attention, frames the music in a way that makes it feel like a journey from one place to another,” Reznor explains. “It's cool to give people an experience.”
With just a couple days to go before the festival, tensions rise, as Reznor’s vision isn’t matching with the show’s technical aspects.
“Trent demands, demands, demands excellence,” says Art Director Rob Sheridan. “And that high level of expectation leads to a lot of stressful moments.”
As Reznor puts it, with new music, a new lineup and a brand new live show on the line, “What could go wrong?”
Hesitation Marks drops on September 3 and is currently streaming on iTunes. The band will then kick off a series of North American tour dates this fall beginning on September 28 in St. Paul, MN.
