Chris Cornell Talks Soundgarden/NIN Cash Covers

SAO PAULO, BRAZIL - APRIL 06: Chris Cornell of Soundgarden performs on stage during the 2014 Lollapalooza Brazil at Autodromo de Interlagos on April 6, 2014 in Sao Paulo, Brazil.
When Soundgarden and Nine Inch Nails announced their joint tour, which kicks off tonight (July 19th) in Las Vegas, most just saw a bill that contained two iconic bands that broke in the 90’s, but they actually share a very unique link.

In addition to releasing major albums on the same day (Superunknown and The Downward Spiral were both released on March 8, 1994), both bands have been covered by Johnny Cash.

In a recent interview with Meltdown from Detroit’s 101 WRIF, Chris Cornell reflected on this and what it meant to be covered by The Man In Black:

“Yeah, that’s interesting, ‘cause that was a huge thing for me.  I remember seeing the video for ‘Hurt’, and I was a big fan of the Nine Inch Nails version of that, and I think their video that was on MTV was a live version, but it was amazing.  When I saw Johnny’s version, it was almost hard to watch.  It was so sad, and it was so heavy, and I had that same reaction when I heard him do ‘Rusty Cage.’ I remember getting phone calls from people leaving messages saying how they heard his version of “Rusty Cage” and how amazing the lyrics were.  And no one said that to me about the lyrics when they only heard my version.  It wasn’t until he was singing it that people actually bothered and said ‘Oh, let’s listen to what he’s saying.’  That was a big moment in my life him doing that.”

Leave it to Johnny Cash to shine a new perspective and appreciation on Soundgarden and Nine Inch Nails.
